The castle Gradara

Castle of Gradara Gradara Castle was built between the 11th and 15th centuries and was the scene of continuing conflict between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families before falling under control of the Sforza family.
However its place in history has been secured thanks not so much to these warring families but to the great poet Dante.
In the Divine Comedy, in the fifth Canto in the Inferno, he recounts the tragic love affair between Paolo and Francesca, which stands as a timeless symbol for generations of lovers.
Their passionate affair took place here at Gradara Castle and their chamber in the castle still has a melancholy atmosphere which remains just as poignant today.

The Onferno caves

Visit the Onferno caves The Onferno Caves are the only natural caves in the Conca Valley.
The caves' narrow tunnels were formed by a small stream that over millions of years carved into the mass of chalk on which Castrum Inferi once stood.
Although they do not extend very far, the caves are quite awesome and extremely interesting from both a speleological and faunistic point of view.
It is possible to visit the caves.
The Onferno Caves and the surrounding area have been protected and an oriented nature reserve since early 1992.

Mondaino

The medieval village of Mondaino On a high hill of the Valconca, we find the country of Mondaino.

Remembered from the reports of 300-400 as the "Country of the Pacts".
Today is a place full of pleasant surprises, such as the attractive square, the castle with its panorama stretching away to the mountains and down to the sea, and mysterious tunnels beneath the town itself that are said to be haunted.
Then there are picturesque streets and alleys, stately mansions, and a museum with fascinating display of the fossilised remains of the animals that inhabited this territory millions of years ago.
Other attractions include a botanical park with an interesting collection of Mediterranean plants and trees, and the local residents are experts to organize fairs, festivals and other lively events.

The mystery of Azzurrina in the Castle of Montebello

Castle of Montebello Montebello is only a few minutes from Torriana and can be reached thanks to beautiful but extremely winding road that leads to Castle Gate, the entrance portal to the medieval fortress. The fortress itself stands on a picturesque hillside about 400 metres above sea level, and Montebello “castrum” has been documented since the late 12th century.

Montebello has one of the most beautiful and best-preserved fortresses in Romagna with the unusual feature of having foundations that rest on the peak of the mountain itself.
In Latin, "Mons Belli" means the Mount of War and indeed it has witnessed numerous assaults, starting with the Malatesta family in 1186.
After about 200 years the Montefeltro family conquered it and the fortress remained in their possession until 1438 when Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta once again conquered it.
Today Montebello Castle is owned by the Guidi di Bagno family.

Montebello Castle is a popular destination for numerous tourists, drawn here by the legend of Azzurrina, an eight-year old girl who disappeared mysteriously inside the fortress while playing with a ball.

Fortress of San Leo

The massive fortress of San Leo Historical capital of Montefeltro, San Leo is situated in the valley of Marecchia.
Apart from the medieval centre, the fortress and the parish church, San Leo is famous like the place where he came imprisoned and then he died the mysterious alchemist Count Cagliostro.

The facts and legends surrounding the life of this extraordinary alchemist, doctor, magician and freemason are hard to separate.
It ended with his sentence to death by the Holy Inquisition for heresy.
His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment which he served here at San Leo.
But this was to bring him little comfort.
He died a long agonising death, imprisoned first in the castle's so-called Treasury Room and then confined in the 'pozzetto', where he died after four long years, refusing to take the sacrament.
